Job Description

Lucas Group is conducting a retained search on behalf of our client, a US based manufacturer of building materials, for their next Director of Supply Chain and Procurement.  This position is a key role that will oversee all purchasing and supply chain activities for the company.  This is a great opportunity for an experienced manager to make their mark in a growing organization. 


  • Manage the raw material supply chain for the 4 company wholly owned manufacturing locations, in the US.
  • Manage the raw material supply chain and production scheduling for 1 toll manufacturer.
  • Manage the supply and sourcing of alternative materials, sources, vendors, and distributors, for each of the above, as consistent with the company’s quality and UL requirements; and other appropriate regulatory requirements.
  • Work cross functionally with customer services, logistics, operations (production), and sales, to ensure the smooth running of the business, and consequently, plants are kept running, and customer orders are met and fulfilled as required by the business.
  • Use various forms of Materials Requirements Planning processes to plan and execute supply.  Communicate, train, and involve those groups that support or can help lead this business function.
  • Compile the annual raw material budget for the company.  Communicate and adjust same, as appropriate.
  • Oversee the administration of purchases to ensure compliance with the companies accounting and financial policies.
  • Negotiate pricing of raw materials, facilities, warehouses, logistics, other items, and services as appropriate.
  • Negotiate long term agreements, leases, and other contracts in support of the business.
  • Ensure the company has competitive raw material, items & other service costs.
  • Provide market analysis to assist in the management of future material costs, risks, and availabilities.
  • Prioritize purchasing activities in accordance with risk, reward, profitability, and quality requirements.
  • Track performance of materials, vendors, and operational efficiencies of same.
  • Track cost in use of materials, against a standard.  Find improvements.
  • Track actual costs versus forecast, budget and standard, by plant, vendor, or other appropriate cost activity.
  • Eliminate, mitigate, and manage non-performances, for raw materials and other items as required.
  • Manage all packaging sourcing, graphics requirements, UL requirements with the vendors and marketing department.
  • Work on special projects as required.

Scope of Position:

Direct and coordinate all appropriate activities related to the purchasing, supply, procurement, and cost management for all raw materials, finished goods, maintenance parts, services, office supplies, miscellaneous manufacturing plant and corporate office needs related to the business needs of the company and its various affiliates.

Directs and coordinates the logistics, importation, and exportation of raw materials, goods and services, as required.

In addition, support strategic initiatives as related to operational efficiency, capacity, business information, planning, and annual budgeting activities.  Approximately 80 – 100 SKUs.

Key Relationships:

  • Purchasing Department: Communicate, planning, organizing, troubleshooting, training, standing in for, eBS entry work, excel spreadsheet work, devising new sourcing strategies and revising old ones
  • Operations Department: Planning, clarifying, supporting, leading, and advising
  • Sales Department: Planning, clarifying, supporting, advising, collecting information
  • R&D/ QC: Requesting, planning, advising, providing information
  • CEO /Board of Director: Provide information, deliver presentations
  • Vendors: All forms of communication from administrative to negotiation
  • UL: Administrative, Regulatory, Trade Groups

Job Requirements:

  • Track record of business leadership and management, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • 5 years business management experience
  • 10 years supply chain and purchasing experience
  • BS degree or similar
  • MBA preferred
  • APICS certification preferred (CPIM, CSCP, etc.)
  • Clear communication skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to partner and work cross-functionally with different departments and outside vendors.
  • Strong business analytical skills / acumen. 
  • Organizational ability. 
  • Software skills: Numerate, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Technical knowledge of industrial minerals, chemicals, paper, plastics, packaging, construction, process manufacturing, MRP, SOP, and Quality systems.
